What Causes Morning Sickness?

Morning Sickness or “NVP” is something that is well documented – but not necessarily fully understood the world over. Exactly why it’s called “Morning Sickness” we can only suggest is because it predominantly occurs first thing in the morning – however the term “NVP” or “Nausea and Vomiting of pregnancy” might be more appropriate as the symptoms can and do occur at any time – anywhere.

Many say it’s to do with hormones, and that its natural and should be left alone. Others say that while it’s natural – the severity of symptoms can bring danger to mother and baby alike.

Search the net you'll find abundant  information morning sickness and the methods people advise to deal with symptoms.

The number who suffer?

There is a lucky minority who don’t suffer at all, and there are those who suffer for the first few months. There are those with mild symptoms range through to those “Hyperemesis Gravidarum” – the most severe.

Then there are those who suffer the whole pregnancy term however – an accepted sufferance number for the pregnancy arena is an approximate 80%.

This is not a national statistic – this is a figure that affects every population the world over.

There are those who think along the same lines..

Maternal susceptibility to nausea and vomiting of pregnancy:

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy shares many characteristics with motion sickness, a vestibular dependent phenomenon.A number of physiologic changes that occur in normal pregnancy are also known to accompany nausea and vomiting in patients with motion sickness and certain vestibular disorders. This chapter summarizes some shared features of both phenomena. The unmasking of subclinical vestibular disorders may account for some cases of hyperemesis gravidarum. Hormonal effects on neurotransmitter function may also play a role in nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and in some vestibular disorders; however, the specific neural mechanisms of nausea and vomiting have not been identified. Until the neurochemical processes underlying these phenomena are understood, prevention and management will remain in the domain of astute, but so far limited, clinical observation.
